Pueblo - South Central ColoradoIncludes Colorado City & Pueblo West
Enjoy the 267 days of sunshine Pueblo has each year! At the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains, Pueblo has historically been known as a natural crossroads and melting pot for diverse ethnic groups since the dawn of time. Ute, Cheyenne, Arapaho and Kiowa tribes as well as Spanish troops, mountain men, and gold seekers would often come to do business. In 1806, Capt. Zebulon Pike built a log fort -- the first structure built by Americans in Colorado. Eventually the railroads found their way to Pueblo and in the late 1880s the town built smelters. The Pueblo Reservoir sits on semi-arid plains encircled by limestone cliffs and buttes with mountain vistas. The man-made lake, with its clean, cool water and great fishing along its 60 miles of shore, is ideal for sailing. Museums, Victorian Mansions and Zoo: Stop at the EL PUEBLO MUSEUM AND BYWAY INFORMATION KIOSK (from I-25, exit 98b head west, on the southeast corner of Grand and 1st Street) for great area information. The museum has exhibits on Pueblo's history from American Indians to industrial development. ROSEMOUNT VICTORIAN HOUSE at 419 W 14th this 1893, 37-room mansion still has 85% of its original furniture, a great treasure. SANGRE DE CRISTO ART CENTER contains four galleries, fine arts, dance programs and children's museum, open Monday through Saturday from 9am to 5 pm. Visit THE UNION DEPOT on B Street this impressive depot was completed in 1889 for $400,000. PITKIN AVENUE HISTORIC DISTRICT in the 300 block of Pitkin with seven elegant Victorian homes on the south side of the Street. At the PUEBLO ZOO at City Park experience a rain forest, meet rare domestic animals up close in the Pioneer Ranch, and see lions, snakes, bears and many other animals. The new Frontier Pathways Scenic and Historic Byway connect Rye/San Isabel, Westcliffe and Colorado City/Pueblo via Colorado Highways 165 and 96.
