The Sportsman Outdoors & Fly Shop is a comprehensive outdoor retail and gift store specializing in supplying the fly fisher, fisher, and outdoor enthusiast; we have the equipment and services needed to have a great vacation in the Colorado San Juan Mountains. Since 1955, we've earned the reputation of personal, friendly service and exceptional technical expertise. With over 4,000 square feet of gear and gifts, we provide a wide selection of technical outdoor clothes, footwear, gear and accessories from name-brand companies for adults and children. Along with a full-service fly fishing pro shop, we also provide gear for spin/bait fishing, camping, hiking, bicycling, snowshoeing, and backcountry skiing. Believe it or not; we also have gifts and HOMEMADE fudge made right on-site! Everything for the fly fishing trip of a lifetime -- experienced guides, custom planning, and Pro Shop! Our professional guides introduce, instruct, and thrill with walk-wade trips of any duration -- half-day, full-day, and multi-day. You can experience the wild waters of the San Juan Mountains with trips on the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River, Henson Creek, Cebolla Creek, and many other public and private rivers and streams. We offer personalized training with a variety of schools, clinics, and instruction: beginners to advanced with special classes for women and kids. We outfit our guests using the best quality equipment, including Simms waders and boots along with Sage rods and reels. Rest assured; we make sure you get individualized attention with only 2 to 3 fly fishers per guide.
HIKING TOURS -- Hiking offers peace of mind! 1/2 day and full day tours are available into the area's four Wilderness Areas and hundreds of miles of trails surrounding Lake City. Our guides know the area and love sharing their knowledge of local lore and the wildlife that surrounds us. Take some time and hike with an expert; we'll take care of you while you explore with your camera. Close to Lake City, you have nearly 350 miles of trails to explore -- through mountain forests, by clear lakes, into moose yards, and by beautiful vistas -- a pristine wilderness just waiting for you. Leave the pavement and enter the adventure, crossing the remote and spectacular San Juan Mountains! Take one of our personalized 4-wheel drive tours in the comfort of our vehicles. Visit ghost towns, alpine meadows, and most thrilling -- go over the high-country passes such as Cinnamon and Engineer Passes, both over 12,000 feet! The passes were built during the "Gold Rush" for the ore wagons from 7 nearby ghost towns to take gold and silver ore to the smelters in Ouray, Lake City, and Silverton. Explore the abandoned buildings, town sites, and old mining districts. We provide 1/2 day and full day tours in a Tahoe 4X4 that seats 5 people. Tours include a box lunch and lots of fun without the driving hassle! (The Alpine Loop is our most popular tour.) If you're a hiker, camper, or ATV enthusiasts, The Sportsman also provides shuttle services for you and your gear to any trailhead in the area! Available Between November 1 through March 31, depending on weather conditions. Now you can get away from the outside world while experiencing the fresh air and beauty of the Colorado San Juan Mountains, without emptying your wallet! Everything you need to enjoy an old-fashioned winter vacation: backcountry ski and snowshoe rentals. We'll help you find lodging and even provide box lunches (for when you're on the trail).
