Deep inside the White River National Forest, snowmobile riders can find some great trails.
Vail Pass, just west of the town of Red Cliff, climbs to a maximum altitude of 10.666 feet in altitude and offers spectacular views along the way. Nestled between the Vail and Copper Mountain ski areas, the area is perfect for anyone who likes to mix up their winter activities.
To access the Vail Pass trailhead, follow I-70 to the top of Vail Pass. There is a large parking area and visitors must check in at the visitors booth. The area is administered by the Forest Service, and there is a $6 daily fee per person for use of the trail. A season pass can be purchased for $40. The trail can also be accessed from the town of Pando, which is on State Road 24, between Leadville and Minturn.
The trail is a multi-use recreation area, so snowmobiles should stick to the designated routes. Get a copy of an official Vail Pass Winter Recreation Map from a ranger for more details.
